Founded in 1800, the Library is the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, containing more than 167 million items, including books, recordings, photographs, newspapers, manuscripts, maps, and more. The Library’s mission is to make its resources available to Congress and the American people, and to sustain and preserve the Library’s collections for the benefit of future generations.
